I was bored and disappointed with groups that should be the antithesis of all that playing it safe. This year I got bored of the same cloying cute concepts, the same songs that try to be 15 songs at once. From a fan’s perspective, a lot has “changed” in K-pop too (the song title in Korean 변했어 literally means “You’ve Changed”). “I just wanted you to look at me/I know love changes as time passes,” is directed at an ex-lover, but also speaks to the fragile reality of the idol machine, and how easily our dreams can pass us by. She tears into the lyrics with the ferocity of someone well aware this might be her last chance. Hyeran’s sixteen stunning bars are the song’s centerpiece rather than simple flourish in the typical K-pop way. The gloomy, piano-driven production chugs along with machine-like precision, but it’s the human elements here that intrigue. Matt Vitone: “Deepened” clicks from the first note. There’s a sadness which catches you right there, and that makes this fairly essential. This is a song of regret, made all the more powerful by its juxtaposition of piano-based near-balladry with freestyle snares preparing to body-rock (which happens in the chorus, albeit subtly). Thomas Inskeep: Even if you don’t know the lyrics to “Deepened,” you get the melancholy, thanks to the vocal performances of Brave Girls. Ramzi Awn: Brave Girls nail the pre-chorus and fade-out on “Deepened,” a breezy track with texture. ![]() ![]() Then the chorus goes full Miami Bass - which should be illegal at this point, ’cause man, does it bang.īrad Shoup: Outside of the appearance of a clopping beat (and ignoring the Mustardy “hey”s), it’s a fine slow jam in the Braxton mold: cleanly-etched anguish, small high harmonies, midnight piano chording. Leonel Manzanares de la Rosa: The slow mecha-beat/elongated piano chords combination in the verses rarely works with vocals that are too frontal in the mix, but the second-verse rap, with such a commanding flow and interesting rhythmic choices, puts that idea to rest. Will Adams: I love the mashup of the piano ballad and trap templates here neither outweigh the other at any point, and the balance between the former’s sweetness and the latter’s melancholy make for an engaging listen. The main thing it’s got going for it is that powerful, in your face rap break, but the rest of the song’s simple sexy R&B, designed for grinding and not really designed for analyzing.Īlfred Soto: It’s got the bump of a The-Dream production but not the grind - it’s pleasant fare.Įdward Okulicz: The combination of that deep, grinding throb and a sad piano is interesting but awkward - how am I going to get down to this when it sounds desperate, as if the voice of the song isn’t getting into its own groove? Iain Mew: “Deepened” mostly works as a rolling mood piece, its forefronting of atmosphere above all an unusual choice which pays off because it sets up Hyeran’s rap as the moment everything solidifies. One of the most striking individual performances in a K-pop song I’ve heard all year. It’s already a melancholy song, and kind of a flat one until that point, but her performance gives it the emotional core it needs. Brave Girls are hardly the only K-pop group that have had years of never progressing past “struggling,” but Hyeran really does sound like it’s her last chance in “Deepened,” throwing herself wholly into her half-sung verse. Madeleine Lee: Back in February, rapper Hyeran described the promotions for this song as her last chance. Matt brings us a K-pop group that might be struggling elsewhere, but not with us…
![]() Both versions are very close as the arcade version runs on Sega’s Naomi board which is a arcade version of the Dreamcast itself.Ĭrazy Taxi also became available on PlayStation 2 and Nintendo GameCube in 2001 and then Microsoft Windows in 2002. The Game was originally release in arcades in 1999 and was then available on Dreamcast in 2000. The sense of freedom while marred by the timer counting down constantly left you wanting to explore as much of the sunny California themed city and all its quirky secrets that are hidden away in the game and its pop punk soundtrack.Ĭrazy Taxi is a crazy dash of fun while some argued that Crazy Taxi stuck a little too close to the arcade version to have any real longevity, the replay value came from the sheer fun of the game. For the time limited setting you play for the designated amount of time chosen then the taxi stops automatically, so no more points can be scored.įor the ‘Arcade Rules’ the player starts with one minute of gameplay but it can be extended with time bonuses earned from speedy journeys.Ĭonsole versions of the game also had the feature ‘Crazy Box’ which was a set of minigames such as dropping off a number of customers within a time limit, bowling using the taxi as the bowling ball and popping giant balloons in a field.Ĭrazy Taxi was a great and early example of what an open world game could deliver. You can select three, five or ten minutes or ‘arcade rules’ used in the original version of the game. If the time runs out before you are at the customer’s destination then the customer will jump from the taxi without paying and with the timer counting down you had to find another fare quickly to stay in the game. Ratings are then awarded to the player depending on how long it took you to complete the journey. Once you are close enough to the destination you can stop within a given zone. Then once you have reached the destination the customer pays their fare and is added to your money earned. You are directed to the passengers destination by a massive green arrow at the top of your screen, it doesn’t adjust based on obstacle, but just points in the general direction of the given destination. Along the way you can earn money by performing stunts. The aim of the game is to pick up taxi customers and get them to their destination, as quickly as possible. This game, essentially, has three game modes: Around Apple, Small Apple, and Crazy Pyramid. I can’t help it! I’ve got the music playing at me, the customers yelling for or at me, and an ever decreasing time limit to play under. Starting off, I am reminded of the original. And, as a bonus, I have not read or watched any reviews on it (well, one video mentioned it in passing, but it was an offhand reference anyway.) Since I haven’t played the first game in a while, maybe I won’t apply as much “Nostalgia-Comparison” logic to it. I could see them just fine without taking the headset off and it didn't interrupt my work. But those things didn't seem like a big deal while wearing the headset or talking to my wife and son throughout the day. Windows are still blown out when sunlight is streaming in, colors are still muted compared to real life, and the frame rate is closer to a cinematic 24fps than anything representing real life. That doesn't mean it's perfect by any means. It's just so well-balanced and feels light on my head, even after hours of using it for work.Īnd it's hard not to sing the praises of full-color passthrough. It might be heavier than a Quest 2 but you'd never know it. That's also a testament to Meta's ability to perfectly balance the weight on this headset. It also meant that my neck wasn't killing me by the end of the day. Having a giant monitor in front of my face while I'm sitting on the couch wasn't just nice. Every time I checked it was in the single digits and the only time I noticed any real delay in mouse movements was when my PC entered a low battery state. The latency between my computer and the headset wirelessly is almost nonexistent. I did see this happening from time to time but it simply meant that I needed to adjust the headset a little bit higher on my head, as the edges of the lenses do fringe white text a bit. The text is super clear and easy to read - even if I can tell I'm still staring at a display panel that doesn't achieve "retina" level of pixel density - and there's no obvious fringing or chromatic aberration happening with white text on dark backgrounds. I had a lot of high hopes that this would finally be the virtual replacement for my giant 43-inch monitor/TV in my office when I'm not sitting there and, so far, it feels superb to work in this environment. Working on the headset is surprisingly good, too. ![]() (Image credit: Nicholas Sutrich / Android Central) You'll definitely get sick if you try to play VR this way. It's pretty cool even if it'll only work for mixed-reality applications like working on a PC with a headset on. Secondly, having my side and bottom peripheral view open actually widens my perceived field of view by making my brain think it's seeing more of the virtual world than it really is. Pancake lenses on the Quest Pro don't have the stupidly small "sweet spot" of the old Fresnel-style lenses on the Quest 2, which improves the overall area you can see clearly. While it's only technically 10% wider than the Quest 2's FoV, there are two things that more greatly affect the feeling: the lenses, and the periphery view. The first thing I noticed when going straight from the Quest 2 was the improved FoV. Connecting it to the Meta Quest app was stupid easy - literally two clicks once I had the app open - and it even asked me to install the last 15 apps/games I had previously used on my Quest 2 to make things easier. You'll need to unpack the headset and controllers and dock them in the included dock for the initial charge, plus I had an update waiting for the headset as soon as I connected it to my Wi-Fi. With that said, the initial setup process was a bit long like any device usually is. It worked exactly as I expected, and that's precisely what it's going to take to get people to start converting to this kind of workflow. I just stood up, my virtual monitor went away as I got a full view of the room I was in, and then went back to me being at my virtual desk the moment I sat down. Using an app like Immersed to work on my laptop in VR without being at my desk is a thing of beauty, and it works so darn well for two main reasons: full-color passthrough, and the speed of operations on the Quest Pro.ĭuring that entire popcorn-making sequence above, the screen never flickered, faltered, or did anything weird. ![]() Yes, even making the popcorn and drinking out of my giant gallon-sized water bottle. I did all of this while wearing the headset. After setting them down, I walked over to the pantry, grabbed a bag of popcorn, popped it in the microwave, and took it back to the couch to continue writing this initial review piece. I stood up, grabbed my laptop, water, and the Quest Pro controllers, and walked over to the couch. My back was already tired of sitting at the kitchen table and I was ready to move to the couch to finish my day. Late in the afternoon, after my wife and son heated up a bag of popcorn, I knew I was going to need my own. |
